NORWALK, Connecticut, June 2. A piece of Norwalk sports history left us last week.
In fact, you can take the word "sports" out of that sentence. What Marie Corridon Mortell did 62 years ago was more than sports history.
She was a part of Norwalk history, period.
Norwalk's only Olympic gold medalist quietly passed away last Wednesday night at the age of 80, leaving behind a legacy of swimming excellence that brought national and international fame to her hometown with perhaps the greatest single athletic achievement in the annals of this city.
